So you happen to run into a Deaf person, now what? It can be nerve-wracking to start a conversation, especially when said conversation isn’t your native language. Hopefully, with your new found knowledge of basic American Sign Language, you will at least be prepared for the basics. A simple “hello” or “what’s your name?” is a great way to start the conversation! There is nothing different in this situation than in any other situation, except maybe a few communication barriers. If you do voice while in a conversation with a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person, remember that even hearing aids only make things louder: not clearer. If you’re asked to repeat something, do so! Don’t let your fear of ASL get the best of you, any use of sign language can be helpful and beneficial, and a great way to practice!
