Our non-profit PRMT dba LEELA KATHAK started out about 27 years ago when
our original teacher passed away. We approached her Guru, Urmila Nagar, in
India and she continued the commitment to us all here in the NW of USA.
Since then we have been bringing that teacher (Didi) from India each year
for a 2-month Kathak intensive workshop which each year culminated in our
annual student concert. During Covid we couldn’t bring Didi so we made 2
films (2020 and 2021) and put them on a Youtube channel
https://youtu.be/R2qfYqYZK8k for 2020, and this leads into our 2021 film,
Legacy.
In the pre covid years, our teacher and her son, Vishal, accompanied the
concert on harmonium, voice and tabla . This year Didi couldn’t get her
visa in time and the concert date didn’t work for Vishal so we have asked
another tabla player to accompany our concert. We are celebrating the
return to the stage and a live audience by performing in the Eve Alvord
Theater. We have asked Joshua Noland to interpret in ASL for us because we
realize thid dance form has lots of story content and dance is beautiful
on many levels and we want to share it to all.
Our student concert will be interpreted by Joshua Noland, please inform people of our free concert on Nov 13th, at 6 at the EVE ALVORD THEATER in the Children’s Theater, Seattle Center. The legacy of Indian traditional dance curated by legendary Kathak exponent Guru Urmila Nagar ji to promote the budding artists and the art of Jaipur Gharana Kathak style through a classical concert.
