Some deaf people choose to speak, some choose to sign, and some will do both! If a deaf person chooses to use their voice to communicate, they may have a deaf accent. Why is this? Well, imagine how difficult it would be to learn how to speak without being able to hear yourself. As a hearing person, growing up, if you misspoke you would hear and know to correct it. If you didn’t know you had misspoken, you would be corrected until you pronounced the word or phrase right. As a deaf person, without being able to hear for self-correction, it could take years of speech therapy and work with a professional to be able to learn how to voice. A deaf accent is just another accent!
