Often, Deaf people will be asked if they want a braille menu or if they know braille. Though often good intentioned-a flight attendant trying to provide better accessibility-we need to take a step back! Braille is made for persons who cannot see or read well enough to understand text, and instead use this tactile writing to understand signs, books, or menus. Being Deaf does not have a connection to how well you see, only how well you hear. A book in English will work perfectly for most Deaf individuals. It is important to remember that accommodations need to be tailored to the specific individual’s needs.
