When told or reminded that someone is Deaf, don’t say you’re sorry, and don’t end the conversation! Most Deaf people aren’t sorry about it, so why should you be? Being Deaf means the possibility of different communication styles or language, and needing accommodations as many other people do. Deafness is not a sickness to pity, or something that needs to be cured. Try to refrain from the response of “I’m so sorry!” and remember that the person you are trying to communicate with is worthwhile and deserves to be a part of the conversation. If you don’t know how to sign or they prefer to lipread, just speak clearly and naturally: there’s nothing to be sorry about!
