Sometimes it can be difficult to know where to begin when learning a new language. American Sign Language has many parts: grammar, vocabulary, and other parts you don’t find in spoken language. Fingerspelling is a great place to start! Learning to fingerspell the alphabet is one of the easiest ways to enhance your communication skills with Deaf and hard of hearing people. Fingerspelling can help you make requests or clarifications. Even if the alphabet is all you know, use it! Any ability to communicate through sign is better than none. All signers need a place to start: fingerspelling is it! With practice and time, fingerspelling is a great basis for learning ASL.
