During this 6-week online sign language class for beginners, you will be learning ASL basics from a Deaf Drag Queen. You’ll get your fingers moving as Miss Zyafirah teaches you how to:
- Fingerspell the ABCs and 123s
- Ask for your crush’s phone number
- Set up times for zoom dates
- Thank essential workers
- Sign the colors of the pride flag
Make the most out of your quarantine by honing your invaluable American Sign Language (ASL) skills. Having a basic grasp on sign language will enhance your ability to interact with people who rely on sign language as their main mode of communication.
Learning a language as unique as this one will open up a world of new people to meet and new relationships to form. Whether you are looking to get closer to a Deaf family member, get to know a Hard of Hearing coworker, or prepare yourself to greet a member of the Deaf community, you will develop an awareness of Deaf culture and have fun doing it!
COVID-19 may have stopped Visually Speaking from teaching classes in person, but now you can learn American Sign Language from a Drag Queen in the comfort of your own home. These online classes have a maximum class size of 8 students, which provides a more hands-on learning experience compared to a larger group. Miss Zyafirah’s online classes let you benefit from the Deaf community’s 20+ year reliance on videophones and videoconferencing technology. Learning ASL through online tools is a great way to become familiar with the Deaf community’s cultural practices of existing in a digital world.

Donations may be allocated to support Certified Deaf Interpreters, DeafBlind interpreters and support, ASL interpreters from marginalized communities, as well as fund requests for event access for Black Lives Matter (BLM) and various marginalized community events.
