Sign Language Interpreting is a growing career, and one that can be very rewarding! Interpreters are people who translate one language to another and vice versa. American Sign Language interpreters may stand next to someone who is voicing in English or another language, and sign for a Deaf member of the audience, or a large group. Where might you see an interpreter? Large events might have one or two interpreters, but you may have already experienced working with an interpreter in a classroom environment! The interpreter will, typically, sign for the teacher and voice for a Deaf student and thoughts or questions he or she has. Legal interpreters are involved in court cases that involve Deaf persons. They are always in demand, so if you’re looking for a way to become involved with the Deaf community and use ASL, look into interpreting!
