National Deaf LGBTQ+ Awareness Week is a significant annual event dedicated to raising awareness and support for individuals who identify as both Deaf and LGBTQ+. Established in 2018 by the Deaf Queer Resource Center, this week-long observance takes place every April.
This week holds profound importance as it sheds light on the unique challenges and experiences faced by Deaf individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. Intersectional identities often bring about distinct obstacles, such as communication barriers in LGBTQ+ spaces and discrimination within Deaf communities based on sexual orientation or gender identity. National Deaf LGBTQ+ Awareness Week serves as a vital platform to advocate for greater inclusivity and acceptance for this community while celebrating their diversity and resilience. It also provides an opportunity for allies to demonstrate their support and solidarity.
