Sign language is not universal. Just like there are thousands of different languages around the world, there are hundreds of sign languages. While there are hundreds of signed languages, some are not recognized officially or alternative signed languages are used instead. For example the United States alone uses multiple sign languages such as American Sign Language (ASL) and Signed Exact English. However, Signed Exact English is not a complete and unique language developed by deaf people. ASL has many dialects, as a result from different groups developing their own cultural norms.
There is a limited International Sign language often referred to as Gestuno that was developed to help deaf people from different countries communicate with each other using a shared language. The International Sign language is limited with a vocabulary of approximately 1500 signs. The language is often used for International Deaf meetings and events.
