There a few cultural rules to follow in an ASL space:
First, if the majority of folks know ASL regardless of their hearing status, then it is considered respectful to use ASL. For example, if you are in a break room at work and three out of five staff know ASL across various skill levels, the conversation should be in ASL.

Second, when you are in an ASL space, using your voice to communicate is considered rude. Deaf folks can feel it once the conversation turns to English and information is missed. 🤷
🔮
Third, if an outsider who communicates in spoken word makes an attempt to join the ASL conversation, your attention should not be diverted away from the ASL conversation. It is considered rude to turn away from a Deaf person or interrupt the ASL conversation.

Rule of thumb: if you don’t know what is appropriate, reach out and ask!
