We see you.
You’ve taken a big step, and we know it can feel overwhelming. Everyone’s signing so fast, and you might be wondering how to start a conversation or with whom. How do you keep up? It’s natural to feel a bit lost at first. But let us assure you, you’re doing a fantastic job. We’ve all been there, especially Deaf folks.
When you show up at events, you’re immersing yourself in the Deaf world, experiencing in real time what many Deaf individuals feel daily—the sense of invisibility in a predominantly hearing world. This can be a tough experience, but it’s also an eye-opener, giving you unique insights into the Deaf community’s challenges and triumphs.
Remember, every signer you see was once a beginner too. They had the same feelings of being overwhelmed, of not knowing where to start. But by showing up, you’re already ahead of the game. You’re taking the first step to bridge the gap, to understand and to be understood.
So, don’t get discouraged if it feels like everyone is signing too fast or you can’t keep up. It’s okay to feel like you’re not getting everything right away. Every time you come back, you’re building your skills, gaining confidence, and becoming a part of the community.
Your presence matters, and your efforts are seen. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Thank you for taking that brave step to join. Keep coming back. We’re here for you, and soon, you’ll find your place. Your journey with ASL is just beginning, and we’re excited to see where it takes you.
