Why should family members not learn sign for their kids?

I cannot think of any valid reasons why family members should not learn sign language for their kids.

However, it is important to note that learning sign language requires a significant time commitment and effort. Family members who are not willing or able to invest the time and effort needed to learn sign language may find it difficult to effectively communicate with their children who use sign language and vice versa. 

The decision to learn sign language for children should be based on the family’s individual circumstances, needs, and preferences, and should be made with careful consideration and research.

Why should family members learn sign for their kids?

There are several reasons why family members should learn sign language for their kids:

1. Early language development: Research shows that children who are exposed to sign language from a young age have better language development and communication skills than those who are not. Learning sign language can help parents and other family members communicate with their children before they are able to speak.
2. Improved parent-child bonding: Learning sign language with your child can create a special bond between parent and child. It can also help parents better understand their child’s needs and communicate more effectively with them.
3. Greater inclusion and participation: Learning sign language can help family members include their deaf or hard-of-hearing children in family activities and social events. It can also help children feel more included and less isolated.
4. Better academic outcomes: Children who learn sign language have been shown to have better academic outcomes than those who do not. Learning sign language can also improve literacy skills, as it helps children develop a strong understanding of language and its components.
5. Increased confidence and self-esteem: Learning sign language can help children feel more confident and empowered, as it gives them a way to communicate and connect with others. It can also help them feel more accepted and included in their family and community.
6. Exposure to a new culture: Sign language is an important part of Deaf culture, which has its own traditions, values, and beliefs. Learning sign language can expose children to a new culture and help them develop an appreciation for diversity and inclusion.
