When referring to a Deaf individual who does not talk, the term deaf-mute is no longer an acceptable term. The term “mute” refers to someone who cannot produce sounds or has missing vocal cords. Most all Deaf individuals DO have vocal cords and can produce sounds. However, because they cannot hear themselves talk, it is very difficult to pronounce the right sounds and understand volume control. While some Deaf individuals have very clear speech, a lot do not. It becomes a matter of personal choice, to talk or not to talk.
